NYLON.COM'S BEST PARTIES OF ART BASEL

The Best Party Photos From Art Basel Miami 2016
By NYLON

Art Basel is one part art and two parts parties. It’s that special time of year when boldness trumps all, and there’s always going to be one person one step bolder than you. There are more parties and galas than one can possibly attend in a weekend, but we tried our very best.

One that particularly stood out was The Noir Collaboration with Rocky Barnes and Caroline Vreeland at The Penthouse at the Soho Beach House. It was a denim and patch lovers dreamland, with Typoe art and designs by some of the most exciting makers out there. Plus, Chelsea Leyland was behind the turntables, which turned the party out. Elsewhere, Nick Jonas’ foundation threw a party called #BeyondBasel, which raised diabetes awareness. We rubbed elbows with Madonna, too. Be still our rebel hearts. Best. Art. Basel. Ever.

DECO DRIVE SEGMENT ON 7 NEWS MIAMI

Josie Bruno Vintage on Deco Drive: "Chic Camo!"

(WSVN) - Military chic is always in, but this season anything camouflage is a must-have. Especially camo jackets! Tonight, Josie Bruno Vintage is sharing its one-of-a-kind camo creations. It’s one of Shireen’s favorite things. There’s nothing like a man in uniform, especially when it comes to camo. But you don’t have to be a petty officer or a private to appreciate the trend.

For the past few years, military chic has been on the front line of fashion. But this winter, it’s camouflage that’s come out of hiding. Especially camo jackets. And, no one does it better than Josie Bruno Vintage in Surfside. We caught up with designer Patti Bruno Rivero at her workshop to see her one-of-a-kind camo creations.

Patti Bruno Rivero: “The bulk of my business has turned to special order or bespoke jackets.”

Patti uses real retired camo, and then…

Patti Bruno Rivero: “I start with some basic patches, so you can pull a color story or a theme, but then I layer on broaches, pins, any artifact that you have. People have come to me with little bags of jewelry, from when they were younger, or their mother’s broaches.”

She’ll even use a vision board to capture a client’s personality.

Patti Bruno Rivero: “And then I’ll modify it. You approve it, and then the jacket arrives.”

Everything is hand-sewn and no two jackets are alike.

Patti Bruno Rivero: “I’ve already started pinning, that’s great. She loved the snake and wanted me to embellish everything with red flowers to make it a little softer for her.”

For the blog, I tried three jackets, three different ways: Sassy for work with a puffy skirt. Casual with my own military style pants. And chic for a night out on the town.

Patti Bruno Rivero: “If you have anything at home, any broaches, just add them. A lot of the women I deal with have drawers full of fun things. Chanel does amazing broaches, throw them all on. Not one, all. So, more is more. More is more.”

Especially when it comes to vintage camo. And that’s why it’s one of my favorite things.

SHIREEN'S FAVORITE THINGS BLOG FEATURETTE

Josie Bruno Vintage on Shireen's Favorite Things

What:

Vintage camouflage jackets re-imagined with eye-catching patches, bedazzled emblems and beautiful broaches by Josie Bruno Vintage.

Why:

I went through this crazy phase in high school: I would only wear black. Think goth-meets-alternative rock with a Madonna-esque edge. When I grew tired of being monochromatic, I would throw on one of my dad’s old military jackets. There was just something really special about them.

I loved the texture, camouflage material and smell. Eventually, one of his jackets became my own uniform of sorts, helping me feel more self-confident through my awkward teen years. Looking back on it now (at least the old photos,) I was definitely onto something fashion wise. I just didn’t know it at the time.

Fast forward a few decades later: military-chic has become a fashion mainstay, but for me, it still can’t compete with my dad’s old military jacket. That’s why, when I heard about what “Josie Bruno Vintage” was doing, I had to feature them on the blog.

Patti Bruno Rivero is the mastermind behind the company (which is named after her mother) that creates one-of-a-kind camo and denim jackets. She designs what I like to call ‘modern day charm bracelets.’ Meaning, she takes everything you love and adore and sews them into a creative, eye-catching piece of clothing.

Patti can attach patches, broaches, pins, lace and just about anything else your heart desires. The best part? All of her work is rooted in vintage and she doesn’t alter the jackets in any way. They’re kept completely intact, as an ode to the soldiers who wore them.

Instead, she re-purposes them; giving new life and a fresh perspective on an already intriguing garment. When it comes to what you can put on the jacket, Patti says: “It’s all about the placement.” She doesn’t overdo it, striking the perfect balance between bedazzle and understated beauty.

If you’re not into something custom-made, you can shop off her racks and still find something special. Although she reuses certain themes, nothing is ever duplicated. That’s definitely refreshing, given the fact we’re in a time where finding something unique to wear is almost impossible.

Don’t miss Deco Drive tonight at 7:30pm & 11:30pm on Channel 7 (WSVN) as we go behind the scenes with “Josie Bruno Vintage” and see first-hand how “Vintage Camo,” is created. It’s definitely one of my Favorite Things and I’m almost positive it’ll be one of yours, too. Happy Shopping!
